Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery

Nose surgery, otherwise known as Rhinoplasty, can accomplish a variety of things. It can reduce the overall size of a nose, improve the tip, remove a bump, increase or decrease the width or even improve the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Generally, any or all of these changes can be made during one operation which usually takes between 1-2 hours. Like a sculptor, Dr. Tarshis carefully modifies and reshapes the bones and the cartilage. A bump can be reduced or totally eliminated. The sides of the nose can be brought closer together to make the nose narrower. The tip can be made smaller and also lifted to enhance the angle between the nose and upper lip. When an oversized nose is made smaller, the nostrils may need to be reduced in size. Unbalanced, crooked or curved noses can be straightened and made more symmetrical. After surgery, a fibreglass mold is placed on the nose to maintain the new shape and to protect it. This will stay in place for one week.

“I had been self-conscious about my nose all of my life. My only regret is that I waited so long to do something about it.”

You will be up and around the day after surgery and any discomfort you feel can be controlled by mild medication. Cold compresses on your eyes can reduce swelling and bruising while you keep your head elevated. The splint typically comes off within six days. Bruising around your eyes will start to fade within a couple of days and usually disappears within a few weeks. Most people return to work within a week to ten days. Makeup can be used to cover any remaining bruises.

There will still be a slight swelling of the nose which will slowly subside over time. Your final result may not be realized for several months. Occasionally, further surgery may be required for additional changes and revisions.

The results will be immediate and dramatic if your nose was very large or if a big bump was removed, but usually, the changes are more subtle. Your surgery should improve your appearance without drawing attention to itself. Remember, the idea is not to create a new nose, but rather to improve and enhance the one you have. The difference may be subtle, but the resulting improvement in facial harmony and proportion will last the rest of your life.
